We Do What We Do

There are a total of seven departments operating under the Department of Public Works, making for a widely diversified arm of city government. Things can go wrong almost every day, our citizens want action, and we’re here to help, but sometimes a call to the wrong department delays the response. With seven departments the Department of Public Works handles a wide variety of requests or complaints each and every day.  The following summarized listing may help our citizens understand what we do and, ultimately, what we don’t do:

Street Division
Snow plowing; 
Leaf collection; 
Street sweeping; 
Sanitary sewer main repairs and maintenance;
Storm sewer repairs and maintenance; 
Equipment maintenance and repairs; 
Sign installation, repairs and maintenance; 
Pavement marking; 
Pavement repairs; 
Pothole patching; 
Brush chipping; 
Storm cleanup; 
Gravel road grading; 
City-owned parking lot maintenance/repair; 
Alley maintenance/repair; 
Dead animal disposal (from city-owned property only);

Groundskeeping
Annual tree and stump removal (from City Property)

Parks and Recreation
Mowing and other grounds-keeping activities at all city-owned parks (mostly contracted services);
Tree trimming and removal (contracted services);
Irrigation system installation, repairs, and maintenance;
Facility repairs and maintenance;
New construction;
Trash removal and portable toilet maintenance.

Plym Park Golf Course
Collection of greens fees, annual pass fees, cart rental fees, etc.;
Grounds maintenance (greens, fairways, irrigation, etc.);
Conduct annual city golf tournament;
Schedule league play;
Building repairs and maintenance;
Golf cart and equipment maintenance;
Capital improvements and related work.

Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport

Develop and maintain airport layout plan; secure federal and state grants, working with MI Bureau of Aeronautics and FAA;
Oversee airport improvement projects (fencing, runways, buildings, taxiways, etc);
Runway, building, and grounds maintenance. 

Silverbrook Cemetery
Sale of burial lots;
Sale of columbarium niches;
Grave opening and closing;
Graveside services;
Cemetery maintenance;
Recordkeeping.

DPW/Engineering

Oversee operations of all departments under DPW administration;
Handle requests and complaints from public;
Payroll;
Records;
Budget preparation;
Permit Issuance for:

  • Sanitary sewer connections 
  • Sidewalk construction
  • Drive approach construction
  • Excavation permits
  • Tree trimming/removal
  • Refuse Collection Trucks;

Public building maintenance/repair;
Oversee annual removal of city-owned dead, dying or dangerous trees;
Oversee annual trimming of city-owned trees;
Secure state and federal grants for public improvement projects;
Plan review for various commercial, residential, industrial construction projects;
Act 51 (gas and weight tax) financial recordkeeping and reporting;
Administer Michigan Department of Transportation maintenance contract;
Capital improvement projects (inc. engineering, specification writing, bidding, purchase, inspection, etc.): 
Road and sewer construction projects
Sidewalk construction projects
Park construction projects
Bridge projects
Airport construction projects
Golf Course projects
Light and Heavy Equipment purchasing
Compliance with federal and state rules and regulations related to safety, the environment and other matters.
